Home waste segregation needs exactly three containers: one for organic waste like food scraps and peelings, one for clean recyclables like plastics, paper, glass and metal, and one for general waste that fits neither. In most Ugandan households the organic bin turns out to be the biggest by far, which is precisely why separating it changes everything: it is the fraction that smells, attracts flies, and can become compost instead of landfill.
The three-bin system
| Bin | What goes in | Where it ends up |
|---|---|---|
| Organic | Food scraps, peelings, garden waste, ash | Compost or organic processing |
| Recyclables | Clean plastic bottles and containers, paper, cardboard, glass, metal cans | Recycling partners |
| General | Everything else: wrappers, diapers, broken ceramics | Licensed disposal |
Making it stick in a real household
- Put the organic bin where the cooking happens. The kitchen generates it; the kitchen should catch it. A lidded container controls smells between emptyings.
- Rinse and dry recyclables. One oily container can contaminate a batch. A quick rinse when washing dishes is enough.
- Flatten what you can. Bottles and boxes take a third of the space when crushed, which matters between pickups.
- Teach the categories once, label the bins. Children learn the system in a week and often enforce it better than adults.
What the effort buys you
A segregated household typically halves what actually needs disposal. The organic fraction can become garden compost at home, which we cover step by step in our composting guide, or ride a segregated route to processing. The recyclables have real value; what qualifies and what does not is in our Kampala recycling guide. What remains is a smaller, drier, cleaner general bin that does not smell by day three.
The collector matters as much as the sorting
Segregation only means something if the streams stay separate after the truck arrives. Ask your collector directly how recyclables are handled. Our Waste Management division offers segregated household pickup with recycling and composting partnerships behind it, so the work you do in the kitchen ends where you intended.
Frequently asked questions
What are the three categories for home waste separation?
Organic waste for food scraps and garden matter, recyclables for clean plastics, paper, glass and metal, and general waste for everything else. Three containers are enough for a typical household.
Do plastic bottles need to be washed before recycling?
A quick rinse is enough. Recyclables should be clean and dry; food residue contaminates whole batches and can send them to landfill instead.
Why bother separating waste if it ends up on one truck?
It should not, with the right collector. Ask whether recyclables ride separately or on separate days. Collectors with recycling partnerships, like ours, keep the streams apart because mixed loads lose their value.
